In the 1970s, sightseeing often involved covering vast distances on foot, typically in shoes ill-suited for the task, all while pretending it was relaxing.
The meticulously arranged flowerbeds, geometric patterns of red and white blossoms, suggest a bygone era where nature was strictly controlled and made to perform for human amusement. People would spend considerable effort maintaining these intricate designs, only for the average tourist to walk right past them, focused instead on locating the nearest ice cream vendor.
The vast palace looms on the right, a testament to someone's long-ago insistence on building something unnecessarily large, while the distant terraced gardens hint at more walking. Generations of visitors have come here, all looking for the "experience" they were promised, most likely finding only exhaustion and a mild sense of obligation.
The historian's note
Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, Germany, served as the primary summer residence for the former rulers of Bavaria. Construction began in 1664, with extensive additions and garden modifications over subsequent centuries, including the elaborate Baroque parterre gardens seen in the foreground.
By the 1970s, the palace and its extensive grounds had long been converted into a public museum and popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from across Germany and internationally. The upkeep of such grand historical sites became a significant aspect of cultural preservation and tourism infrastructure.
The formal gardens, a key feature of Baroque design, reflected a desire for ordered nature and served as a setting for courtly life and promenades. Their continued maintenance in the late 20th century preserved an important example of European landscape architecture for public appreciation.
