A middle-aged man stands shirtless in his kitchen in boxer shorts, filling a metal vacuum thermos at the counter with the focused attention of someone preparing for an important expedition — which, in the 1950s, could mean anything from a fishing trip to a Saturday of yard work. The thermos was the decade's answer to hydration logistics: a piece of engineering that required two hands and a modest ritual to operate, and that kept coffee hot for precisely long enough to feel like a triumph over entropy. He is tanned above the waist in the specific pattern of a man who has spent the summer outdoors without a shirt, which in that era was simply what men did in their own yards and, apparently, kitchens. No one thought to put a shirt on before someone pointed a camera at them, because a camera in the house was a friendly thing belonging to family, not a permanent record. The thermos would be washed, refilled, and outlast the kitchen it was filled in.
