A woman in a black one-piece swimsuit sits cross-legged on a wheeled chaise lounge at what is plainly a hotel pool deck — the word RESERVED is stenciled on the frame beneath her, which was how resorts in the 1950s managed the small daily drama of who got the good chairs. The man beside her has the relaxed, folded-arms posture of someone who has already lost interest in the vacation and is now just waiting for the vacation to end. A corrugated privacy screen and a palm tree visible over the roofline place this somewhere in Florida, where postwar Americans had recently decided that lying in the sun for a week was a form of achievement. The umbrella beside her is angled away from the sun, which means the shade it was installed to provide is landing on an empty chair. She has the direct, patient expression of someone who has been asked to hold still for a camera while the man next to her was not asked anything at all.
