Sometime in the 1950s, someone pointed a camera at what was meant to be a tender moment and got this instead — two people folded into each other so completely that the frame can barely sort out whose limb belongs to whom. The woman's embroidered blouse, the kind of everyday good dress that 1950s mothers wore simply because that was the standard, places this squarely in a decade when informal did not mean careless. A small child has burrowed into her, arms wrapped tight around her head, the posture of someone who has decided that whatever is happening in the room, this is where they are staying. The photographer was presumably trying to record affection and instead recorded the moment affection became a mild structural crisis. What the blurred foreground and the awkward angle caught, without meaning to, is the fundamental asymmetry of the thing: the child is holding on for dear life, and the woman is simply letting it happen, which is more or less the whole job.
