A man in a mustard sweater vest crouches beside a large wicker basket overflowing with small painted model houses — the kind of folk-craft item that, in the 1950s, occupied the productive hours of men who had recently survived a world war and were now determined to do something cheerful with wood and pigment. The houses are bright, tidy, and probably identical, which suggests a workshop approach to whimsy rather than an artistic one. He is not smiling, which is the correct expression for a man who has made several dozen of the same small house and is now waiting to see if anyone wants one. The setting — dappled shade, a tree, people milling in the background — has the relaxed disorder of a neighbourhood garden fair or church-grounds sale, the postwar American social institution built on the assumption that community goodwill could be monetised in small denominations. He looks at the camera with the patience of someone who has already explained the price twice and expects to explain it again.
