The architecture suggests a place built for grand pronouncements, perhaps revolutionary ideas or at least highly organized student rallies, with a central elevated platform designed for maximum visibility. In the 1970s, many institutions planned for such spaces, expecting a constant stream of important public discourse that would fill them to capacity. It seems mostly to have served as an efficient shortcut between classes.
Below, an array of automobiles from the era, big metal boxes moving slowly, their drivers unaware that in just a few decades, every college student would carry a tiny supercomputer in their pocket, making cars seem almost quaint. People mill about on pathways, mostly small, dark specks, as if rehearsing for some unannounced future.
It all has the slightly formal, slightly disconnected feel of a university campus viewed from a high tower, where individual efforts look insignificant against the grand design. Someone, somewhere, believed this specific layout optimized human interaction or learning, even if no one below currently looks optimized.
The historian's note
This image depicts the Asa Packer Campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, during the 1970s, likely viewed from one of the upper floors of a campus building such as Linderman Library. The distinctive stone architecture in the foreground is characteristic of the university's historic Gothic Revival structures.
The campus layout, with its mix of academic buildings, green spaces, and pathways, reflects a typical American university environment of the period. The presence of numerous vehicles from the 1970s on the roads further anchors the scene within its historical decade.
Lehigh University, founded in 1865, underwent significant expansion and modernization throughout the 20th century. Images from this era document the transition of the campus and the daily life of its student body during a period of considerable social and educational change.
