Someone in the 1960s owned a color slide projector and a conviction that the ixora hedge by the back fence deserved documentation. The plant did not disappoint: dense clusters of red and yellow-orange florets crowding out the leaves, the kind of tropical shrub that made suburban gardeners in warm climates feel they had personally out-performed nature.
The galvanized pipe fence behind it was installed for function, not beauty, but it ended up as the accidental frame for the whole composition, proof that most garden photography of the era was really about whatever happened to be standing nearby. A stretch of mown lawn fades into the background, empty and tidy in the way lawns were expected to be before anyone worried about what maintaining them cost.
No person appears in the frame, which was the custom of the amateur botanical photographer: the point was never who took the picture, only that the ixora had bloomed spectacularly and someone had been organized enough, for once, to record it before it wasn't.
