Somebody knelt on gravel for this one, which in the 1960s was the going rate of effort for a wildflower photograph, since there was no zoom lens to save your knees. The plant is Indian paintbrush, a favorite of amateur nature photographers precisely because it does the hard work for you: the color is already arranged, already vivid, already looking like it means something.
The woolly gray-green foliage and the bracts blazing orange-red are doing all the botanical labor here, while the actual flowers, small and easy to miss, hide politely inside. Most people who photographed this genus never learned that distinction and were fine with it. A National Park brochure or a roadside pullout was usually enough authority to call the shot a documented specimen.
Slide film of the era rewarded exactly this kind of high-contrast subject, saturated color against pale granite, which is presumably why the frame survives sharp and confident decades later. Nobody labeled which mountain, which trailhead, or which July it was, on the theory that a flower this recognizable didn't need a caption.
The historian's note
Castilleja, commonly called Indian paintbrush, is native to western North America and was a frequent subject for amateur nature photography during the family road-trip era of the 1960s, when national and state parks saw a postwar surge in car-based tourism. The plant's showy color comes from modified leaf bracts rather than true petals, a detail rarely noted in casual photographs of the period.
The rocky, alpine or subalpine setting and pale granitic substrate are consistent with the high country of the Sierra Nevada, Rocky Mountains, or similar western ranges where several Castilleja species are common. Color slide photography of wildflowers became a popular hobby pursuit in this decade, driven by inexpensive 35mm cameras and Kodachrome processing widely available through drugstores and camera clubs.
