Yucca brevifolia has a way of looking like it was designed by a committee that couldn't agree on whether to make a tree or a cactus, and then went home without resolving the question. This specimen, standing in the pale caliche hardpan of the Arizona high desert, has branched into the dense, globe-like crown that only comes after decades of slow negotiation with drought — each rosette of spine-tipped leaves arranged with the aggressive symmetry of something that has never once been browsed by anything with a mouth and intends to keep it that way.
The Mojave-to-Great Basin transition zone that runs through northwestern Arizona produces exactly this landscape: Joshua trees thinning out across a bajada of gray scrub, a rocky escarpment cutting the background, the whole scene drained of color by midday sun in a way that makes it look older than it is. By 2002, digital cameras were already edging out film for casual travel photography, which makes the warm, slightly washed tonal quality here a minor period marker — the last years when someone on a desert road trip still had to decide whether a Joshua tree was worth spending one of the thirty-six frames on the roll.
They decided it was, and they were right. The Joshua tree was already carrying more symbolic weight than any plant reasonably should — named by Mormon pioneers who saw in its raised arms a figure from scripture, adopted as an icon by everyone from the National Park Service to a certain Irish rock band — and this one stands in the middle of all that accumulated meaning, entirely indifferent to it.
