On the image
A wide moat still protects the Imperial Palace grounds, a remnant of a time when cities required actual water barriers. On one side, the ancient stone walls and green slopes rise, holding back the present with centuries of design. On the other, the Tokyo skyline from the 1970s crowds forward, a testament to efficiency and a belief that higher is always better.
Building straight up to the edge of an ancient defense system makes a certain kind of practical sense in a crowded city. The people who planned these new structures probably saw the moat as prime real estate frontage, a nice view for their office workers.
The entire scene presents a confident juxtaposition: one era believing in deep water and stone, the other in steel and glass, both convinced they had found the ultimate solution to urban living.
The historian's note
This image depicts a section of the Imperial Palace moat in Tokyo, Japan, during the 1970s. The moat is a significant historical feature, originally part of the outer defenses of Edo Castle, the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Edo Castle was largely destroyed, but its extensive moats and stone walls now form the protective perimeter of the Imperial Palace, the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan. The visible urban development on the left bank reflects Tokyo's rapid post-war economic growth and modernization during the mid to late 20th century, with multi-story office buildings encroaching on the historical core.
The scene illustrates the dynamic interplay between historical preservation and modern urban development in central Tokyo. The moats continue to define a substantial green space within the dense metropolitan area, serving both as a historical landmark and a natural boundary.
