Every December, someone in Arizona decided that what a perfectly good lodge needed was a rolling rack of sweatshirts and a folding table covered in gift-wrapped boxes, and the regulars came anyway, carrying shopping bags and wearing the expressions of people who had already bought two things they didn't need and were weighing a third. The stone fireplace behind them was built to anchor the room across decades; the merchandise in front of it had a shelf life of one afternoon.
The figure in blue moving through the center of the scene has the purposeful blur of someone who has spotted something on the other side of the room and is in motion before finishing the thought. Around her, the rest of the crowd has settled into the patient, slightly dazed rhythm of a craft fair — seated at the edges, bags accumulated at their feet, committed to staying until they've seen everything at least once.
A yellow state flag hangs beside an American flag above the fireplace, which gives the whole enterprise the low-grade civic dignity of an event that considers itself a community tradition. By 2002 this format — lodge, folding furniture, holiday garland strung over the doorway — was already a formula so established that no one running it thought to question whether it still needed to happen.
