Sometime in December 2002, a lodge in Arizona converted its great-room into a combination waiting area and impromptu boutique, which is a thing that happens when an organization decides the holidays are both a reason to gather and an opportunity to move merchandise. The floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, the exposed timber trusses, and the Arizona state flag overhead gave the room a certain aspirational rusticity that the rolling garment rack full of polo shirts did nothing to undermine.
The guests had settled into the upholstered furniture with the unhurried patience of people who are there because someone they know is in charge, and who have therefore accepted that the schedule is approximate. One man in a Nordic sweater stood in mild motion blur at the center of the room, which is the fate of anyone who believed, in the moment, that they were just passing through.
The Christmas tree glowing red in the far corner and the garland strung along the upper walls confirm that whoever organized this had full seasonal commitment. The shirts on the rack, uniformly light-colored and sized for optimism, suggest the event also served as a fundraiser — the kind where buying something is understood to be participation, and not buying is quietly noted.
