On the image

Somewhere in the Canadian Rockies in the 1950s, a grand white hotel had decided that what a wilderness setting really needed was parallel beds of tulips, arranged by color, running the full length of a manicured lawn toward a dense wall of spruce. The resort had committed fully to the proposition that guests who had traveled hundreds of miles to see unspoiled mountain wilderness would enjoy it most from a lawn chair, surrounded by flowers a groundskeeping staff had installed at considerable effort.

Two guests have paused on the grass to study the flower beds with the focused attention that expensive hotel gardens reliably produce in people who would walk past the same flowers in a city park without slowing down. The low terraced wing connecting the main château to the outbuildings suggests the whole complex had been expanding incrementally for decades, each addition made in a slightly different spirit than the last, and nobody had noticed.

This was the era when the great railway hotels of western Canada were still functioning as destinations in themselves — the mountain was the backdrop, the hotel was the point. The lawn exists to confirm you arrived somewhere worth arriving.
