Somebody's daughter has been posed against the hydrangea bush the way a car is posed against a sunset in a dealership ad, positioned so the flowers do the flattering work the photographer's flashbulb could not. Her hair has been set into the tight, symmetrical curls that required either a beauty-parlor appointment or a mother with strong opinions and bobby pins, and she holds her hands folded in her lap with the careful stillness of a child who has been warned twice already about wrinkling the dress.

The dress itself is doing a lot of talking. White, sleeveless, and clearly reserved for one specific category of occasion, it belongs to the era's short list of events that justified this much ironing: a confirmation, a piano recital, a cousin's wedding, or a school function important enough that the family broke out the good camera and the good flowers on the same afternoon.

Behind her the house sits in the flat, unbothered white of clapboard siding that every subdivision agreed on without discussion, and the wooden fence marks the exact boundary of what this family considered their business. Nobody in 1950s America photographed a child for no reason; there was always an occasion, and the occasion always came with a dress code the child had no vote in.
