On the image
Somebody handed the photographer a camera at exactly the wrong moment, which is usually the only moment worth capturing. The girl in front has done her eyes with the full teenage commitment of the era, dark liner sweeping upward the way every fashion magazine of the decade insisted was the look, and she is gazing off past the lens as if the actual point of interest is somewhere else entirely.
Her father, close behind her shoulder, is not looking at whatever she's looking at. He is looking at the camera, or possibly through it, with the specific expression of a man who has spent the whole afternoon keeping one eye on his daughter and one eye on whoever she's been talking to. It is a look that predates the 1960s by roughly all of human history and will outlast the decade's hairstyles by a comfortable margin.
The backyard behind them, all soft green shrubbery and back-porch light, is doing its best impression of a peaceful suburban afternoon. Nobody in the frame is fooled.
The historian's note
This is a domestic snapshot typical of amateur color photography from the 1960s, when home cameras loaded with slide film became widely affordable and family gatherings were routinely documented in close, informal portraits rather than posed studio settings.
The cosmetic style seen on the younger subject, with heavily lined and shadowed eyes, reflects the mod and youth-culture beauty trends that spread through Western fashion during the decade, influenced by British and American pop culture. Such images, taken in ordinary backyards rather than professional settings, form a large part of the surviving visual record of everyday middle-class life from this period.
No specific location or identity can be established from the image itself.
