Somebody once looked at this stretch of ground and saw a temple, a dam facing, or a war memorial, and ordered the granite cut accordingly. Quarrying in the 1960s still ran on plug-and-feather muscle and confidence, men splitting stone along its grain and stacking the blocks for a client who was, at the time, presumably still planning to pay for them.
The slab in the foreground did what granite does when nobody is watching: it cracked clean through under its own weight, tilting into the gap it made, indifferent to whatever building it was destined for. Nobody came back to move it. The trees at the horizon are the only thing here that grew instead of getting cut.
Behind it the whole field is scattered with its unfinished cousins, a quarry's worth of good intentions gone to seed, proof that the difference between a monument and a rock pile is mostly just follow-through.
