Somewhere in the American South — the Spanish moss hanging from the cypresses behind them places this squarely in the lowland swamps of Louisiana, Georgia, or the Florida panhandle — a couple in work caps and sunglasses are kissing beside what appears to be a campfire, which is either the most romantic setting they could arrange or simply the only one available. The 1950s outdoor leisure couple operated on the principle that roughing it was a form of togetherness, and that any hardship endured jointly counted as a shared experience worth commemorating.

Somebody thought to bring a camera into the backcountry and then thought to use it on this moment, which says something about what they came out here for. The khaki and denim, the military-surplus cap on the man, the practical sunglasses on both of them — this is not a posed portrait session but a candid caught mid-trip, the kind of picture that ends up in a shoebox for sixty years because it was too personal for the album and too good to throw away.

What the camera caught without meaning to is that the wilderness, which they came to experience, is simply standing there behind them, ignored.
