In the 1970s, the dream of living by the ocean often involved cramming as many structures as possible onto any available land. Here, houses cling to hillsides and perch precariously close to the surf, each homeowner convinced their particular patch of earth was permanent. This was before satellite imagery made it clear how many identical "unique" oceanfront properties existed.

The roads twist and turn, connecting these little boxes to the larger world, an infrastructure built to support the notion that proximity to salt air justified all manner of logistical compromise. Each white roof represents someone's bold investment in a view that mostly involved other white roofs.

One can almost hear the real estate agent from this era, enthusiastically describing the "unobstructed potential" of a plot that, from this vantage, seems mostly obstructed by more "unobstructed potential." The ocean, meanwhile, just keeps doing what it does, entirely unimpressed.

The historian's note

This aerial photograph captures a typical scene of coastal residential development during the 1970s. The dense clustering of homes along the shoreline and extending into the surrounding hills reflects the rapid suburban expansion and increasing demand for scenic properties characteristic of the period.

Such growth, while meeting housing needs, often led to significant environmental impacts, including habitat loss, increased runoff into coastal waters, and challenges related to infrastructure and geological stability in dynamic coastal zones. The expansion seen here is indicative of broader trends in land use that would later prompt greater environmental regulation and planning scrutiny in many developed nations.
