On the image

Somebody's private airplane banked low enough over the Peninsula that its propeller blur made it into the corner of the frame, which is the visual signature of a 1960s hobbyist pilot who has just discovered what his camera can do from altitude. Below him sits a brand-new marina, built the way postwar America built everything it wanted more of: dredge a basin, pour a breakwater, and sell the slips before the concrete cures. Rows of white hulls sit obediently in their assigned rectangles, proof that recreational boating had officially become a suburban amenity rather than a trade.

Next door, a golf course occupies prime waterfront acreage that a less optimistic era might have used for something productive. The grid of streets marching up into the hills behind it tells the rest of the story â€” tract housing, laid out with a ruler, for families who wanted a boat slip and a fairway within driving distance of the office. Nobody in this photograph is thinking about drought, or fuel costs, or the fact that leisure infrastructure this convenient rarely survives contact with the future unchanged.

The bay itself, hazy and flat in the foreground, was doing what it had always done, indifferent to the tidy rectangle of yachts someone had recently carved out of it. The pilot, meanwhile, was almost certainly congratulating himself on the shot.
