Somebody cut this ground on purpose. The stumps still show their white wounds, the brush is dragged into piles, and a single spared birch stands like a flagpole over the wreckage, which is what land clearing looked like before anyone worried much about what came after.
In the 1960s this was called improvement, not disturbance. A family or a survey crew or a government resettlement scheme had decided that a flat run of riverbank scrub was better used as a homestead, an airstrip, or a right-of-way, and the fastest way to prove that was to knock everything down and let the sun in. The river beyond, wide and braided through gravel bars, was the reason the site was chosen at all, since in country like this the water was the road.
Nothing in the frame suggests anyone came back to build the thing they cleared it for. The slash pile is still there, the ground still torn, and the forest on the far shore keeps its distance the way it always does, patient about outlasting whatever plans get made on this side of it.
