Someone stood at the edge of St James's Park with a camera and did what every visitor to London has done since the lake was landscaped for exactly this purpose: waited for the water to go still and the palace to line up between the trees. Buckingham Palace obliges by sitting exactly where the guidebooks promise, its pale pediment doing the work of a hundred postcards before this one was even taken.

The 1950s tourist did not need a permit or a queue to get this view, only patience and a fondness for symmetry, since the park's planners had already done the composing for them a century earlier. Ducks and a few strolling figures are visible along the far bank, going about business that has nothing to do with a national monument and everything to do with a Tuesday afternoon.

The trees crowding the foreground were not an accident either; they were planted thick enough to make the palace's sudden appearance across the water feel like a discovery rather than the scheduled reveal it actually is.
