A quiet stretch of river lined with overgrown willows and sumac runs past a handful of white frame houses set back on sloped lawns—the kind of modest riverside property that Americans in the 1940s and 1950s believed represented the good life, or at least a life removed from the city without requiring any wealth. Someone lived here and cut grass and maintained the appearance of domestic stability in a place where the river did the work of keeping the world at a distance. The composition suggests a summer afternoon, the trees already leafed full and the water running full enough that someone had reason to think about it. The houses sit at the exact distance that made them feel private while still connected to a road, a church, a town—the American mid-sized compromise. Whatever was happening here in this moment, the people in those houses were doing it the way people did things before the interstate highways made such quiet irrelevant.
