Somebody drove up into the mountains in winter to make sure a sign got seen, which was the whole point of the Blue Star Memorial Highway program: garden clubs across the country adopted stretches of road and bolted on tributes to the armed forces, on the theory that patriotism and horticulture were natural teammates. The Auburn Garden Club of the Foothills District did its part here, in cooperation with the California Division of Highways, producing a marker built to survive weather, indifference, and decades of nobody stopping.
The sign stands alone on a snowbank with a Sierra ridge behind it, which was either an inspired choice of site or simply wherever the highway right-of-way happened to allow a post. Either way the effect is the same: a small civic monument facing down an entire mountain range, doing its modest best to remind passing motorists that someone, somewhere, organized a committee about this. The mountain does not appear to have noticed.
By the 1960s these markers were scattered along highways nationwide, a quiet infrastructure of remembrance installed largely by women's garden clubs with more civic energy than budget. This one has outlasted the snow season it was photographed in, the cars that passed it, and probably several repaintings, which is more than can be said for most committees.
The historian's note
The Blue Star Memorial Highway program was established in 1945 by the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now National Garden Clubs, Inc.) as a tribute to United States armed forces personnel. Local garden club chapters sponsored and maintained roadside markers, typically in partnership with state highway departments, along designated routes across the country.
This marker credits the Auburn Garden Club of the Foothills District, California Garden Clubs, Inc., working with the California Division of Highways, a state agency that existed under that name until it was reorganized into Caltrans in 1972. The marker's design, with the blue star medallion and standardized wording, follows the national program's template used from the 1940s through the 1960s.
The snow-covered ridge behind the sign places the scene in the Sierra Nevada, consistent with mountain highway corridors serviced by Auburn-area garden clubs during this period.
