Somewhere in the central Rockies — the granite outcrops, the subalpine fir, and the broad valley floor receding into a blue-gray distance all point to the high country west of Denver, likely Rocky Mountain National Park or the Estes Park corridor — an American family pulled off whatever road had been newly improved to accommodate postwar tourist traffic and appointed one person to take the view. By 1955 the national park visit had become a civic sacrament, the understood proof that a family owned a car, had two weeks of vacation, and believed in scenery as a destination. The person half-visible at the rock's edge is doing exactly what the travel brochures instructed: standing near something large and geological to demonstrate scale, and incidentally to give the photographer a reason to press the shutter at all. The valley below — probably the Estes Park basin — had been looked at from this angle by tourists since the 1920s, each generation convinced they had discovered it. The resulting snapshot is indistinguishable from ten thousand others taken the same summer, which is precisely what made it feel like a memory worth keeping.
