On the image

Somebody built this breaker plant assuming the mountain behind it would keep producing coal forever, which is the only way to explain why a structure this size was allowed to become permanent. The conveyor gantries stretch between buildings like a bridge built by people who had stopped noticing how strange it looked, hauling crushed anthracite from the washery to storage, over roads already buried in gray dust that never fully settled.

In front of it all, the culm bank rises higher than the tree line, a man-made ridge of waste rock and slate that the mining company treated as a minor inconvenience rather than a permanent geological feature. Nobody in 1960s coal country expected these piles to still be standing decades later, mostly because nobody expected the mines to close as fast as they did.

The forested hills in the distance look untouched, which was the whole plan: process the coal in one contained, sacrificial patch of ground and let everything else stay pretty. It mostly worked, except for the part where the sacrificial patch never went away.

The historian's note

This is an anthracite coal preparation plant, commonly called a breaker, in the northeastern Pennsylvania coal region during the 1960s. Anthracite mining in this region peaked in the early twentieth century and was in steep, largely irreversible decline by this decade, as oil and natural gas displaced hard coal for home heating.

The conveyor system linking the two main structures moved raw coal from mine cars to crushing and sizing equipment, then to storage silos for rail or truck shipment. The waste rock and slate byproduct, known locally as culm, was piled nearby rather than reclaimed, a standard practice through the mid-twentieth century that left the region dotted with large artificial spoil banks still visible today.

By the 1960s many such plants were operating at reduced capacity or nearing closure, part of the broader collapse of Pennsylvania's anthracite industry that reshaped the economy and population of the region for the rest of the century.
