A substantial building with a yellow-ochre roof sits at the edge of a deep alpine lake, backed by the kind of dramatic forested peaks that made certain valleys irresistible to European hotel developers in the decades after the wars. Someone has planted a flagpole on the lawn—a small gesture of permanence and civility in a landscape that could swallow a hotel without notice. The structure itself is the postwar answer to the grand old resort: compact enough to seem modern, yellow enough to announce itself across water, prosperous enough to matter but not so grand as to seem frivolous to visitors still counting calories. A man in a boat somewhere out there is looking at the exact picture that tourists came to see: the place that promised comfort, modest recreation, and the feeling of having arrived somewhere better than home. The water is the deep blue that only happens at real altitude, and the whole arrangement has the settled confidence of an establishment that expected to be there for decades, which in the way of many such ventures meant it was likely closed or repurposed within one.
