The 1970s traveler knew a certain kind of confidence: that their bell-bottoms and long hair were the height of cool, even when wandering through a thousand-year-old palace built by an entirely different culture. These tourists at the Alhambra have clearly arrived to appreciate a grand example of Moorish architecture, or at least to stand near it.
Centuries of intricate plasterwork and precisely engineered water features were designed to impress sultans and provide an oasis of beauty. Now they provide a backdrop for cameras with chunky lenses and a pleasant murmur of conversation, as people contemplate what exactly they should be feeling in such a historic place.
Every era has its designated wonders, and people diligently attend them. The collective experience of visiting a designated marvel, perhaps taking a souvenir photo, and then moving on, is a ritual that transcends any particular architectural style or fashion trend.
The historian's note
This image captures tourists visiting the Nasrid Palaces within the Alhambra complex in Granada, Spain, during the 1970s. The architecture, featuring intricate plasterwork, arched colonnades, and a water-filled courtyard, is characteristic of the Court of the Myrtles (Patio de los Arrayanes) or Court of the Lions (Patio de los Leones), central areas of the royal residence.
The Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, served as a palace and fortress for the Nasrid sultans, the last Muslim dynasty to rule Granada, from the 13th to the 15th centuries. Its distinctive Hispano-Moorish architectural style and extensive gardens make it a significant historical and cultural landmark.
By the 1970s, the Alhambra was a well-established international tourist destination, drawing visitors interested in its historical importance and unique aesthetic. The clothing styles visible in the photograph are consistent with mid-to-late 20th-century fashion.
