Sometime in the mid-1950s, two women drove or trained into San Antonio and put on their best blue day dresses to visit a building where, by common American agreement, something very important had happened, even if the exact details varied by listener. They are posed in front of the Alamo's ornate Spanish colonial doorway with the practiced composure of people who understood that a landmark required you to stand still and smile, because the landmark had earned it.
The matching blue dresses and the sensible low heels were not an accident — this was a generation that dressed for destinations, treating a national historic site with the same seriousness it gave a church or a department store. One carries a red handbag, the other a woven clutch; both look like they packed the night before and checked the weather. Behind them, a loose crowd of other tourists mills around the entrance doing exactly the same thing, which nobody found redundant.
The Alamo had been a Texas State shrine under the Daughters of the Republic of Texas since 1905, and by the 1950s it had become one of the country's most visited historic sites, drawing families and couples who wanted to stand where Davy Crockett stood and then buy a postcard about it. These two arrived, posed, and got the proof — which was the whole point of the trip.
