On the image

A color architectural rendering shows a sprawling palace complex arranged in the formal symmetry that mid-century developers believed every important institution required, complete with golden-roofed structures, manicured gardens, a swimming pool positioned as evidence of modernity, and a curved river running past as though the natural world had arranged itself for optimal site planning. The rendering sits mounted on a cream-colored board, labeled in script 'Sixty Years of Romance,' a phrase that assumes the viewer shares the architect's confidence that this vision of ordered beauty and national grandeur will remain the whole story. Someone has kept this presentation board carefully enough that it has survived, yet carelessly enough that it now bears the creases and dust of decades in an archive, a monument to a proposal that may or may not have been built as drawn, its optimism preserved in a medium that was already obsolete before the ink dried.
