Avalon's waterfront promenade on Catalina Island was designed to make a visitor feel they had arrived somewhere slightly more glamorous than they had, and in the 1950s it largely succeeded. The big white steamship moored at the pier behind the palms is doing the serious work of convincing day-trippers from the mainland that a two-hour crossing constitutes an international voyage, while a man on a bench sits in the sun with the focused contentment of someone who drove three hours to do exactly nothing.

The kiosk advertising horseback riding is the giveaway to how Avalon operated — an island with no cars, where the prescribed leisure activities were posted on pillars so visitors would know what kind of fun they were supposed to be having. The "Ride a Horse" sign exists because without it, a certain percentage of tourists would return to the mainland having only sat on the grass, and the island's small economy depended on everyone doing at least two paid activities before the boat left.

Catalina in the 1950s was already a nostalgia product — a resort that had peaked in the 1930s and was now selling the memory of its own glamour to postwar families who arrived by the same steamship line that had once carried big-band orchestras to the Casino ballroom. They were happy to buy it.
