Two women occupy chaise lounges beside a small rectangular motel pool in what is plainly coastal Florida, both wearing sunglasses and swimsuits, one in pink, positioned under a fringed red umbrella and a blue-and-white one as though the shade situation required a committee decision. This was the golden age of the American motel pool — a concrete rectangle of chlorinated water that transformed a roadside room rental into a vacation — and the women are doing exactly what the postcard promised: doing nothing, productively, in the sun. A late-1940s sedan sits in the parking lot behind them, and the low white stucco buildings, the palm trees, and the flat horizon place this somewhere on the southeast Florida coast, the kind of town that was still mostly sand and ambition. The poolside furniture is a charming miscellany of wooden chairs, folding tables, and a small side table holding what appears to be the afternoon's reading material, because in the 1950s a proper vacation included the performance of relaxing. Nobody is in the pool.
