計画経済の市民は待つというコンセプトを理解していた。ここでは、きちんと着装した個人たちの選別が、ドイツ民主共和国での市民生活に必要とされる忍耐力を示している。彼らは横断歩道に立ち、自らの前進を可能にする見えない信号を待っている。

国家インフラの柱である中央駅は彼らの背後にそびえ立ち、国家紋章で装飾されており、公共交通さえもが思想的成分を持っていたことを示している。1970年代のGDRにおける日常存在のあらゆる側面は、いつ通りを渡ることができるか、あるいはいつ列車に乗車できるかに至るまで、入念に管理されていた。

The historian's note

この写真は、1970年代のドイツ民主共和国（東ドイツ）内のある特定されていない都市のHauptbahnhof（中央駅）の外側の街路シーンを捉えたものである。建物の建築は大規模なヨーロッパ鉄道駅の特徴的なもので、社会主義国家内での重要な交通ハブとして機能していた。

槌と定規の紋章を特徴とする東ドイツの国旗の存在は、その場所を確実に旧GDRに位置付けている。この国家シンボルは1950年に採用され、社会主義国家とその労働者・農民イデオロギーの重要な視覚識別子であった。

鉄道駅のような公共空間は、国家権力と社会主義的成果の重要な表現であった。東ドイツでの日常生活は、公共の移動とインフラを含め、中央計画経済と冷戦期の高度に組織された政治体制の制約の中で機能していた。
