The historian's note

Tempelhof Central Airport（Zentralflughafen Tempelhof）は占領および初期冷戦期間中、United States Air Forces Europe（USAFE）の主要本部として機能した。示されているビルは Berlin における戦後アメリカ軍建築の典型的例であり、占領下ドイツおよびヨーロッパ全域のアメリカ軍作戦を監督する上級司令部スタッフを収容するために 1950 年代初期に建設された。Tempelhof 自体は Berlin Airlift（1948–1949）の中心として歴史的顕著性を達成し、これはソビエト封鎖中に西ベルリンに補給を行った。飛行場上の USAFE 本部の存在は、分割された都市の西部セクターを維持するというアメリカの決意を強調した。モダニスト的なコンクリート構造は、民主的価値および技術的優位性の表現として合理的で簡潔な設計への時代的信頼を反映しており、数年前同じ都市を支配していた Nazi 新古典主義建築と著しく対照をなしている。
