「THIS IS THE PLACE」と巨大な石造りの台座に大文字で刻むことを宣言するには、ある種の確信が必要だが、その確信は明らかに何世紀にもわたって続いているようだ。頂上に据えられた青銅の像たちは、遠い距離を旅してきた人々の、自らの決定に確実であり、将来の世代にそれを知らせたいと思う人々の、安定した眼差しで見つめている。

The historian's note

この画像はSalt Lake City、Utahのemigration Canyonの入り口に位置するThis Is The Place Monumentを捉えている。この記念碑は、Brigham Youngとモルモン開拓者たちがSalt Lake Valleyに到着した1847年7月24日を記念している。Youngはその谷を見たとき、「This is the right place, drive on」と宣言した。

1947年に献納されたこの壮大な構造物は、Brigham Youngの孫であるMahonri M. Youngによって設計された。Brigham Young、Wilford Woodruff、Heber C. Kimballの著名な青銅像、および開拓者の旅と初期探検家の他の重要な人物が特徴である。この記念碑はUtahの重要なランドマークとして立ち、末日聖徒イエス・キリスト教会の歴史における極めて重要な瞬間とアメリカ西部の開拓を示している。
