誰かが洪水に浸かった採石場、あるいは川によって深く削り出された湾曲部を見つけたのだろう。そして磨耗した岩場の様子から判断すると、歩いて行ける範囲のあらゆる少年がすでにそこを見つけていたに違いない。1960年代、このような泳ぎ場には監視員も入場料も不要だった。必要なのは夕食までには家に帰るという漠然とした了解だけだ。実は全部の安全計画は他人の兄たちだったのだから。
三人の少年が石の縁に腰を据え、カメラに背を向けながら水を眺めている。少年たちが水を眺めるのは、その冷たさに値するかどうかを判断する時だ。一方、小さな頭たちは遠く、深い部分が始まるところで揺らいでいる。誰も浮き輪も救命胴衣も日焼け止めも持っていない。その時代の溺水防止理論はほぼ運任せだったからだ。
彼らの後ろそびえたつ白い石灰岩の壁は、まさにこの活動の世代を重ねた磨きで滑らかに見える。純粋な反復を通じてゆっくりと飛び込み台へと変わっていく崖。公式な銘板を受け取ることのない、いわば非公式の公的記念碑だ。ただ、日焼けして赤くなった肩を一夏分だけ記念に残すのである。
