Saint Isaac's Cathedralの巨大なドームはレニングラードの空景を支配し、ソビエト支配の数十年を通して存続した帝国的壮麗さの記念碑である。その圧倒的な規模は、普通の人々が適切に小さく感じるよう設計された建物の時代を示唆しており、新しい管理下においても依然としてその機能を果たし続けていた。

The historian's note
本写真は1970年代のソビエト連邦レニングラードにおけるSaint Isaac's Cathedralを捉えている。1818年から1858年の間に建造されたSaint Isaac's Cathedralは、世界最大級のドーム式大聖堂の一つであり、Saint Petersburg（1924年から1991年までレニングラードと改名）の著名なランドマークである。
ソビエト時代、大聖堂は世俗化され、1931年から無神論博物館として運営されていた。その宗教的機能ではなく建築的重要性が、この時期における保存を確実にした。
ソビエト時代の車両と赤い旗の存在は、この時期と政治的文脈を確認し、壮大な歴史的建造物が社会主義的日常生活の現実と共存していたソビエト連邦における典型的な都市景観を描いている。
