道路を建設することは、時に地質学を直接掘り進み、圧縮された数百万年分の土壌を時速55マイルで通過する旅人に晒すことを意味していた。異なる岩層──暗くて砕けやすいもの、明るくて堅いもの──は、エンジニアが単にAからBへ行く必要があった時代に誰も考慮しなかった太古のプロセスを示唆している。

控えめなボルトで繋がれた簡素な丸太製ガードレールが、重力と粗雑な運転判断に対する主要な防御壁として機能していた。このような障壁がBuickを停止させるのに十分適切と思われていた時代であり、長い落下の前に何かに衝突させるための役割を果たしていた。

The historian's note

この画像は、岩丘を通る典型的な道路カットを示しており、1970年代に建設されたハイウェーあるいはスケニック・ルートの一部の可能性が高い。道路ネットワークの拡張に伴い、こうしたエンジニアリング・プロジェクトは一般的であり、困難な地形を通る通行可能な勾配を作成するため、かなりの掘削作業が行われることが多かった。

見える地質学的層序は、異なる岩型と地層を示し、現地の地質学の露出した横断面を提供している。道路脇の丸太製ガードレールはその時期の標準的な安全機能であり、急な崖や障害物が存在する地域の車両に対する物理的障壁を提供していた。

こうしたカットはしばしば交通インフラの実用的な目的を果たしたが、同時に地質学的特徴を不本意にも露出させ、地質学者向けの非公式な野外実験室となり、旅人にとって美的特徴となった。
