彼の後ろには2人のクライマーが四つんばいで進んでおり、手で緩い岩石屑を引き上げており、明らかに計画段階全体をスキップしていた。鉱物と化石の砂漠探査は真正な20世紀半ばの娯楽であり、クラブニュースレターやガソリンスタンドの岩石店を通じて週末の趣味人に販売され、毎回技術よりも熱意を報いた。

The historian's note
レクリエーション岩石採集と素人の化石採集は、戦後数十年にわたってアメリカ南西部で急速に拡大した。新しい幹線道路へのアクセス、余剰のキャンピング機器、および地元の宝石鉱物協会の周りに組織されたアマチュア文化によって駆動された。砂漠の荒涼地や浸食された丘陵地への週末旅行は、一般的なファミリーおよびクラブ活動であり、しばしば最小限の専門機器で実施されていた。
このシーンは、その時期に典型的な非形式的で非専門的な野外調査のスタイルを記録している。参加者は普通の衣服を着ており、技術的な装備ではなく手工具を使用し、アクセスの容易さではなく露出した岩石のために選ばれた標識のない急な斜面である。そのような外出は、採集がレクリエーション的なものであり、測量または許可されたサイトに関連していることはめったにないため、機関的な記録ではなく私的な写真記録を残していた。
