石のモニュメントもしくは標識が、数十年に渡って蓄積された地衣類とはい性植物に埋もれている。周囲は非常に密集した森で、太陽光がかろうじて到達する程度である。この構造体は積み重ねた石ブロックでできており、現在は白と灰色の地衣類で厚く覆われているため、元々の形態はほぼ付随的なものになっている。菌類が対象となった。誰かが意図的にこれを建設し、風景に埋め込き、その後立ち去って森に取り戻させた。写真家はこれを、注意を向けるのをやめると人間の意図がいかに急速に無関係になるかという習作として枠づけた。撮影当時、森はすでにこのモニュメントの役割を決定していた。
The historian's note
北米の森における地衣類で覆われた石造構造物は一般的なマーカーであった。境界標識、ケルン、記念碑が多く、19世紀またはそれ以前のものである。20世紀半ばまでに、多くは考古学的な珍品となり、生物学的遷移によって元々の目的が不明瞭になった。ここに見られる地衣類の定着（Xanthoria と樹皮状種が優占）は30～50年間の絶え間ない成長を表し、人間による維持管理または交通がない場所を示唆している。濃い陰影と豊かな着生植物の成長は、温帯の東部または中西部の森、おそらくより高い標高または撹乱が最小限の深い森林内部を示唆している。
