人間の許可や介入なしに存在する場所がある。1950年代のこの水域はそのひとつであり、木と水が絡み合った風景で、道を切り開くことも、その縁を整然と定義することも求めなかった。ただそこに在り、そしてなおその配置に満足しているように見えた。

水面は自然の堆積物の薄い膜を被っていたが、それは地元の生態系が効率的に機能していることの証であり、その中に落ちたものすべてを自治体の浚渫を必要とせずに処理していた。木々はそこに芽生えた場所に立ち、わずかに濁った水面に映って、植物の生命と重力の折れ曲がらない原理を示していた。

それは、することがない者に単純な観察をもたらす類いの自然の風景で、環境活動主義が広く普及した趣味となる前に、風景を味わうことができる静かな片隅であった。明白な人間の存在がないことは、世界のいくつかの部分が今なお完全に私たちを無視できていることを確認させる。

この画像は20世紀中葉の典型的な自然風景を捉えており、林地内の池またはゆっくり流れる小川の可能性が高い。写真は、密集した植生、反射する水、そして自然有機物の堆積を特徴とする、未開発の沼地環境を記録している。このような風景は1950年代の北米全域で一般的であり、まだ開発されていない、または人間による著しい改変の対象となっていない地域を表している。視覚的証拠は、管理されていないが健全な生態系を示唆している。
