The historian's note

この画像は、おそらく*Carpobrotus edulis*である密集した被覆植物を描いており、一般的にはハイウェイアイスプラントまたはホッテントット・イチジクとして知られている。この多肉植物種は、20世紀初頭から、主に道路沿いの土壌侵食制御と観賞用の造園植物として、沿岸部カリフォルニアおよび他の地中海性気候地域に広く導入された。

1970年代を通じて、低メンテナンスで干ばつ耐性のある被覆植物としてのこの植物の人気は絶頂に達した。しかし、その積極的な生育習性と密集したマット状に形成される能力は、やがて侵略的種としての分類につながり、それは在来植生を駆逐し、土壌化学を変化させた。

この写真は、その美的魅力と実用的利点がいまだ高く評価されていた時代に植物を捉えており、その完全な生態学的影響が広く認識される前のものである。
