誰かが果樹の真下に立ち、カメラを真っすぐ上に向けた。これは1960年代に裏庭のシトラスの木がようやく十分な果実を実をつけ、記録を残す価値が出た時の一般的なアマチュアの動きであった。枝に散在する小さな緑の球体は、写真の焦点となり、木がその役目を果たしていることの証拠であることを意図していた。

しかし、その十年の家庭用カメラの露出計は、果実の前ではなく葉の後ろにある明るい空を読み取り、空が勝った。その結果、樹冠はほぼシルエットとして白いまぶしさに対して描写され、果実は写真家が想像した熟した接写ではなく、暗い句読点に縮小されてしまった。

これは完全自動露出計時代の典型的な失敗である。機械は構築された通りのことを正確に行い、その背後にいる人間は、それが自分が望む写真を得ることを意味すると仮定していた。

家庭用シトラス栽培は20世紀半ばを通じて温帯地域の郊外および農村地域の一般的な特徴であり、家族は季節の果実をしばしば年から年へ樹の生産性の記録として写真に撮った。このような画像が芸術的目的で制作されることはほとんどなかった。それらは非公式な庭園ログとして機能し、季節全体を通じて成長、収穫時期、または樹の健康を追跡した。

ここで見られる上向きのフレーミング、すなわち露出過度の空に対する葉と未熟な果実は、自動露出計を備えた消費者向けカメラが逆光を受けた葉を含む高コントラスト屋外シーンをしばしば誤判定していた1960年代のアマチュアカラー写真に典型的である。
