On the image

Someone stood directly under a fruit tree and pointed the camera straight up, which was a popular amateur move in the 1960s whenever a backyard citrus tree finally produced enough fruit to justify documentation. The small green globes scattered through the branches were meant to be the point of the picture, proof that the tree was doing its job.

But the light metre in a home camera of that decade read the bright sky behind the leaves, not the fruit in front of it, and the sky won. The result is a canopy rendered mostly in silhouette against a white glare, the fruit reduced to dark punctuation marks rather than the ripe close-up the photographer imagined.

It is a familiar kind of failure from the era of fully automatic exposure metres: the machine did exactly what it was built to do, and the human behind it assumed that meant getting the shot he wanted.

The historian's note

Home citrus cultivation was a common feature of suburban and rural properties in temperate regions through the mid-twentieth century, with families often photographing seasonal fruit as a record of a tree's productivity from year to year. Such images were rarely made for artistic purposes; they functioned as informal garden logs, tracking growth, harvest timing, or a tree's health across seasons.

The upward framing seen here, with foliage and small unripe fruit set against an overexposed sky, is typical of amateur colour photography from the 1960s, when consumer cameras with automatic light metering frequently misjudged high-contrast outdoor scenes involving backlit foliage.
