誰かがこのプールの縁に膝をついて、真下に写真を撮るのが責任ある行動だと判断した。理由は、滾る鉱物水で満たされた穴は一度記録されれば危険性が低くなるという理論である。プールの縁には、Yellowstoneの熱水地帯が残す珪酸と硫黄の典型的な白亜質堆積物が見られる。その鉱物地殻は踏む足がかけなるほど十分に固い見た目をしているが、たまにそうではなく、1960年代の公園利用者はこの区別を自分自身で判断することが期待されていた。

この十年までに、公園局はすでに何年もの間、不安定な地面と沸騰する水についての看板を設置してきた。しかし青く、そして底知れない何かに近づきたいという人間の衝動には競争相手にならなかった。水の透明性はこれらのプールのすべてのトリックである。その中に何も生きていないため、正確に暗闇の中を真っすぐ見下ろすことができるのだ。この写真を撮った者は、色を捉えると信じていた。実際に色は捉えられた。そして表面を乱すほど長くその中で生き残るものは何もないという静かな事実も一緒にである。

The historian's note

Yellowstone National Parkは1872年にアメリカ合衆国初の国立公園として設立されたもので、地球上で最も大きな地熱特性の集中地帯であり、温泉、間欠泉、そして基礎となる火山システムに供給される噴気孔を含んでいる。この種のプールは、マグマで加熱された地下水が周囲の岩石から珪酸を溶解し、水が表面で冷却・蒸発するに伴い、ミネラル滓として縁の周りに堆積することで形成される。

1960年代までに、Yellowstoneは国立公園制度で最も訪問者が多い公園の一つになっていた。これは戦後の自動車観光ブームの一部であり、毎夏何百万ものアメリカ人を木道と展望台へ連れてきた。熱水プールの非公式な近距離写真撮影は、この時期の一般的な慣行であった。その後の数十年には、不安定な熱水地盤での訪問者の負傷と死亡の一連に続いて、より厳格な木道の執行をもたらした。
