誰かが皮を剥いだ丸太と太めの短い支柱で柵を作った。腰の高さの手すりがあれば観光客が沸騰した湯の近くで愚かなことをするのを止められると信じ切った男の自信を思わせる間隔で並べられている。その奥のプールは、数世紀かけて異論なく自らの主張を通してきた熱いミネラル水がそうするように、周囲何ヤードにもわたって地面を白く漂白している。

1950年代、イエローストーンのレンジャーたちはまだ、どの程度の柵が十分と言えるかを模索していた。目に見える障壁があれば、平均的な行楽客の知性を侮辱することなく思いとどまらせられる、という理論に基づいていた。この仕組みが機能していたのは主に、大半の人がそれを試そうとしなかったからであり、丸太が本気で近づこうとする者を止められたからではなかった。

森は林縁で手つかずのまま暗く佇み、何もしていない――それこそがその日の森の仕事のすべてだった。

The historian's note

1872年に設立されたイエローストーン国立公園は、1950年代にはすでに管理された観光の時代に深く入っており、国立公園局は後年使われるような高い障壁ではなく、熱水現象の周囲に低い丸太と支柱の手すりを維持していた。こうした簡素な支柱柵は、景観に溶け込みつつも境界を示す最小限の素朴な様式のインフラを好んだ、20世紀半ばの公園設計思想を反映している。

写真に写るプールは、白く漂白されたシンター(珪華)の縁と、ミネラルが薄く堆積した浅い盆地を持ち、公園内の間欠泉地帯全体に見られる熱水現象に特徴的なものである。これは珪酸分を多く含む水が表面で冷却・蒸発する際にミネラルの殻を堆積させることで形成される。

こうした温泉への無防備な接近は、この時期には標準的な来園者体験であった。その後、事故の増加と安全基準の進化により、後の数十年でより頑丈な木道や柵が設置されることになる。
