道路地図と実行力を兼ね備えた誰かが、この山腹が邪魔だと判断し、1960年代までにはInterstateハイウェイシステムが予算とダイナマイトを提供して何かしようと決めた。結果がこの荒々しいバンド状岩石の壁で、単一の建設シーズンで数百万年のたまった堆積物をきっぱり切断したもの──車内の誰もが考えることのないエンジニアリングの偉業だが、迂回路について文句を言う以外には。

層は地質学的時間をかけて沈積し、爆破には約6秒かかるパターンで傾斜し亀裂が入る。これがこの時代の岩石と道路作業班の一般的な関係である。裾では、低木と野生花がすでに乱れた地面を奪い返し始めている。自然は建設スケジュールを読まず、以前誰がこの通行権を持っていたかについてあまり気にしないからだ。

この写真を撮るために車を止めた者は、おそらく惑星の断面図を見つめているという事実よりも石の色に興味を持っていた。これは典型的な観光客の配置である:驚嘆が最初で、理解は選択肢。

The historian's note

このような種類の高速道路の切断面は、1956年のFederal Aid Highway Act以降の州間高速道路建設ブームを通じて、米国西部全体で一般的になった。自動車交通の勾配を維持するための山頂爆破は、これまで表面で見えたことのない堆積岩と変成岩の岩盤をルーチンで露出させ、普通の路傍の法面を通行中のドライバー向けの意図しない地質学の授業に変えた。

このような切り口は設計された魅力というより工学的な副産物だったが、戦後のロードトリップ写真の定番になることは素早かった。旅行者は生の層状の岩盤を視覚的に引き付けるものと感じ、形成体の年代や組成を知らなくても。この場面で下の斜面を奪い返す植生は、建設から数年以内に乱れた路傍の地面で一般的な急速な生態学的回復を反映している。
