誰かが週末を、もしかすると何週末もかけて、これらの支柱を丘の礫地に打ち込み、gambel oakとponderosa pineの間に針金を張り渡した。手作業で引かれた境界線が、家畜にも天候にも隣人にも等しく尊重されるはずだという前提のもとに。フェンスは測量士の引く直線ではなく、手で立てられた不揃いな支柱のまま丘を下っていくが、これは土地の境界が、器具を持つ者ではなく、その土地とシャベルを所有していた者によって決められた場合に起こることである。

これは世紀半ばの山岳部農村における、ごくありふれたインフラであった――針金三、四本、今まさにその上に立っている斜面から切り出された無塗装の木の支柱。家畜を中に留め置くか、外に出さないためのものであり、静かに、こちら側は誰かのものだと告げるためのものであった。門は見当たらず、家もなく、その奥で草を食む動物もいない。あるのはただ、針金の周囲で勢いを取り戻しつつある森だけである。低木オークの茂みは、自分がどのフェンスを突き破って生えているかなど気にしないからだ。

撮影者が狙ったのは、フェンスの線と松の茂る丘という、これ以上ないほど劇的でない光景であった。それはまさに、1950年代に新品のカラースライドカメラを手にした家族が、単にそこにあるという理由だけで撮影する類の、何の変哲もない実用的な光景であり、しかもフィルムはフェンスの支柱と違って、それが持ちこたえるかどうかを証明するのに何年もかける必要がなかったのである。
