19世紀の誰かが、水を移動させるだけが仕事のビルに、尖ったアーチ窓と司教級の数の切妻屋根を必要だと決めたことから始まった。誰も異論を唱えなかった。結果は、小さな礼拝堂に扮した石造りの水道施設である。ビクトリア朝の技師たちが絶えず行った市民的な過剰設計の典型で、インフラは来世について意見を持っているように見えるべきだという理論に基づいていた。
1960年代までに、このビルは本来設計された以上のことを求められていたことは明らかだった。上部の壁にボルト止めされた二重ファンハウジングと、その脇のレンガの煙突は、本来の設計を超えて稼働し続けている構造体の不格好な折衷案である。電気がまだ存在しなかった数十年前の石造りの壁に、機械的な換気が接ぎ木されている。樹木がこれほど近くまで成長しているのは、誰もこのビルを新しい目で見たことがないことを示唆している。
内部かつてどのようなポンプやボイラーがあったにせよ、この建築は依然として、実際にそこで働いていた者誰もが与えることのない尊厳を主張している。形が機能を上回るこの緊張関係こそが、この写真の全点である。
