The historian's note

1872年に世界初の国立公園として設立されたYellowstone National Parkは、Yellowstone Calderaの浅い岩漿システムに供給される盆地に集中した、惑星上のほとんどの活発な間欠泉と温泉を含んでいる。これらの盆地に典型的な鉱物平坦地と流出チャネルは、連続的な温水排出から漂白され鉱物が付着していたため、20世紀を通じて公園の最も写真に撮られた特徴の一つとなった。

1960年代までに、自動車観光の増加に伴い公園利用者数は大幅に増加していた。このような盆地は、正式な木道システムと安全柵が広く設置される前に、多数の来園者を引き付けていた。流木と枯れ木は通常、周囲の川の季節的な洪水によって運ばれ、鉱物豊富な水が蒸発するにつれて後に取り残されて、これらの熱水平坦地の縁に蓄積する。

この種の光景は、開放的な熱水平坦地を示し、遠くの蒸気プルームと最小限の来園者基盤施設を備えており、現代的な木道網が来園者アクセスを標準化し、壊れやすいシンター表面への徒歩交通を減らした数十年前のYellowstoneのガイザー盆地に典型的である。
