白いTシャツを着た男が、剥き出しの崖面に地質学用ハンマーを振るっている。その姿勢は、地層を文章のように読み、いま句点を打ちつけている者のそれだ。彼はベルトにサンプル袋をつけ、まぶしさ避けにサングラスをかけているが、ヘルメットはない。1960年代においては、地質学者の自分の足がかりへの確信が保護装備として数えられていたからだ。
彼の背後でノートを手に身をかがめている同僚は、ハンマーが今にも明かそうとしていることを記録している。採石場の壁の根元で手書きされた野外調査記録が、何十年も後にもなお意味をもつという前提のもとでだ。彼らの上にある層状の岩石は、黄土色と灰色に傾斜し縞模様を成しており、どちらの男の職業人生よりも長い時間をかけて形成された。このことについて誰も深く考えているようには見えない。
